Impromptu Dinner @ Shiro Restaurant - One Wednesday, W had a sudden urge for some fine dining, and I was able to find a table for two nearby. I had actually tried Shiro a few times before and had gone to Shiro’s other restaurant Orris, in West L.A.(on trendy Sawtelle, amongst a row of Japanese eateries) which was quite good serving Franco pan Asian tapas style dishes.
Apple martini, with a thin slice of green apple floating on top…..
Amuse bouche, sautéed egg plant on French toast…..
Foie Gras, sautéed with port wine sauce…..
Grilled heirloom tomato with burrata cheese and balsamic vinegar…..
Santa Barbara rock shrimp, butter saffron sauce and farmer market vegetables. By coincidence, we ordered the same dish…..
Chocolate mousse cake and coffee ice cream…..
It was a nice break for a weekday dinner date! So sad it was the last meal of having foie gras because California has now banned restaurants serving anything related to this delicious delicacy. I guess I have to fly over to New York to quench my craving!

I’ll have to remember this next time I go to Pasadena — I tend to lunch there at my favorite Mexican restaurant (Mijare’s). I hope that foie gras will eventually come back to our menus — it seems so silly to ban it!
Everything looks good but the Filipino in me always looks for rice whenever I see food porn lol
I really like the term “Franco pan Asian”
Sounds cool. The only time I fine dine is when I look at your lovely pictures.
I always have this urge for fine dining right after I visit your blog.
@oxyGENE_08 - how many days do you think you can last without eating rice?
@ElusiveWords – Oh don’t go there. Haha There’s no substitute for it.
@slmret - I think you’ll like this place, Janet. And the foie gras issue is all too a political play, I suppose. That makes California such a “special” state, right?
@oxyGENE_08 - @ElusiveWords - And there’re a few types of rice too…..Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.
and I like them all!
@oxyGENE_08 - I shall find some rice dishes for you, Gene!
@ElusiveWords - Take J out for a dinner date this weekend!
@stepaside_loser - Thanks, Andrew! I’m glad my food porn came out good this time around, the little camera phone did well!
Delicous. Now, I just need someone who takes me on an ad-hoc fine dining thing.
it’ll be a while before me and hubby to dine at a nice restaurant! nice food~ i miss being a foodie!
@beowulf222 - Mr.K?
@ds0905 - Have someone baby-sit for you guys!
I’ll be happy to do that too! LoL
@CurryPuffy - Who? Naaahhh!! Never ever.
i’m so wanting those burrata cheese on grilled heirloom tomatoes!
@CurryPuffy - ^___^
Looks tasty!
@rudyhou - Tasty and sort of healthy too!
@christao408 - Yes Chris, somewhat makes me thinking of Orris.
Why was it banned? I am growing some oriental eggplants in my garden. Tomorrow I will bring a couple in and saute with onions and smother the french bread I have, with it. Thanks for the pictures Gary.
@ZSA_MD - That’s because some animal rights group sucessfully lobbied the State, due to cruelty to force feeding these poor animals. By the way, I can imagine you have a very well tendered garden!
