Song of the Day
時光隧道…
是否穿越了這裡…..就能夠回到過往的美好時光呢?
It was a hectic week, the auditors are doing an annual review of my company, therefore, I have been spending a good part of last week stuck in the office. During the weekend, I dragged W out of the house and we drove thirty miles west of Los Angeles to Simi Valley , where the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is located. The main purpose of the visit is to view the Presidential airplane Air Force One, which was used by six other presidents from 1973–2001. I was under the impression that the plane is quite spacious, after watching the Harrison Ford movie with the same name. But the actual aircraft is a much smaller Boeing 707 and certain features of the film’s plane do not reflect the actual Air Force One. Well, it’s all Hollywood glamour, I suppose. The plane was retired in 2001. Boeing, the plane’s original manufacturer, disassembled the plane and transported it to the library in pieces. After the construction of the foundation of the hanger/pavilion itself, the plane was reassembled and restored to museum quality, as well as raised onto pedestals twenty-five feet above ground. As you can see, there’s also a gift shop and a small restaurant on the ground level…
No cameras are allowed inside the plane. It was like a walk through time, with 1980′s era furnishings…
A large piece of the Berlin Wall on display…

Inside the museum, there are thousands of items on exhibit, I’ll spare my readers those dull presidential campaign and Republican propaganda photos. Instead, here is President Reagan’s childhood kitchen which I found interesting. Life was simple back then…
Have not blogged about food for a while, but that doesn’t imply I am on hunger strike. As a matter of fact, there is a whole clout of foodie porn to be posted in the near future. I just need to take an extended holiday from work to accomplish this task. W and I have tried this eatery, Animal, a couple of times. The food here is quite interesting because the menu items keep on changing based on the seasonal availability of the ingredients. The location of this restaurant is nondescript to say the least. There is no signage, the eatery is tucked neatly between Canter’s and Schwartz’s on one of LA’s busiest kosher districts, up the way from the Farmers Market. Inside the restaurant, décor is minimal and boasts not much more than warm white walls, exposed lightbulb fixtures, simple wooden tables (with lining) on both sides of the room and a little bar area at the back. Oh, the menu, is just simplicity in practice…
First course is a simple tossed salad with lettuce, beets, avocado, pita, feta, and creamy sumac…
You really have to try the “pig’s ear”, thinly sliced and lightly fried to a crisp, served tossed with some chilis and topped with a fried egg making for the perfect balance of texture and flavor, savory and sweet.
Duck confit, dressed with dates, pecan, arugula, apple slices in a sherry vinaigrette…
Flat iron steak with artichoke hash and truffle parmesan fondue…
Tres leches, dulce de leche – sweet condensed milk sponge cake…
We did not order any alcoholic drinks, the final tab was about $40 per person, including service charge. It was certainly not a bargain meal but was very delicious. The food is on the exotic side, although this is not the first time I have tried pig’s ears. The tres leches cake for dessert was perfect, not overly sweet, the creamy topping was an icing on the cake. Our service was quick. Since we shared everything, I was impressed with how fast they changed out our plates and silverware. The staff was pleasant, very knowledgeable about the menu and had excellent recommendations. Next time, we’ve got to try the ‘Foie Gras Loco Moco’ which comes with quail egg and spam.

I need to visit Air Force one and Berlin Wall sometime. When I saw the kitchen, I was thinking of Chris trying to cook with the oven. No wonder his cake was loop-sided. lol
The Animal restaurant sounds very interesting. I have heard that pig’s ear is a delicacy, but have never tried yet. I do not remember ever tried foi gras with Spam. The chef must be very creative. Man, you and W food photos are making me hungry. smile.
Are you dating this W fellow? I’m curious.
The Air Force One used in the Harrison Ford movie (and used in real life) is a B-747, which is much larger and wider than the B-707 that was previously used.
“animal” looks like it has a very interesting menu…

Haha~I think you’re right about Chris’ cake. Pig’s ear goes well when stewed with soy sauce and served cold, that makes the texture crispy, just like chewing on a funny bone. W snapped one of the above foodie photos, kudos to him as well! Next time when you’re in LA, we should go on a foodie exploration!
@secade -
You are absolutely right! LOL
Yes, that’s what I thought, because I saw George W. stepping out of a much larger plane on TV not too long ago. I tend to dine there during the earlier hours (before 7pm) so as to avoid the crowd, and that may get better service as well!
no cameras were allowed, but you were a VIP, so you were able to take pictures. is that it??
That sweet condensed milk sponge cake is too good looking Gary. OMG. why do I have to diet?
@ZSA_MD -
Cameras are permitted everywhere except inside the airplane, I guess that applies to everyone. LOL. Diet? I usually go with lighter meals in between these “artery clogging” cuisines. Sounds reasonable?
I kinda quit ordering duck confit because it’s always too salty for me – is that salt on it?
There is an airplane museum in Seattle also has Air Force One… of course, Obama is riding one…
Air Force One seems everywhere
Nice pictures. I can now appreciate how you take your pictures because they’re clear and they’re at the perfect size – my holiday pictures are quite fuzzy at times and didn’t quite capture the great mood I was in.
@CurryPuffy -
The picture where your shadows are all close to each other says it all
It seems like 3/4 of the xangans I interact with are happily partnered… The question is, does blogging lead to happiness, or happiness to blogging? Very curious.
@YNOTswim -
Yes, that’s seasalt on the duck. I prefer stewed duck over this, too dry for my taste. So, I guess Obama is riding the larger plane which Christao mentioned above.
@stepaside_loser -
Thank you, I’m glad you like the food photos. I always try to find a bright spot in the restaurant so that I can see the food! Can’t wait to check out yours!
@secade -
Ah, you’re so very observant, Chris! To be honest, I’m not sure which way is correct. But I’m pretty sure after started blogging here, I’m generally happier because I got to interact with so many nice characters such as yourself!
)
Air Force One supposedly is only referred to the actual aircraft with the president on board. Otherwise they have their own Special Air Mission designations.
And Chris is correct with the 707 and 747.
I wanna go to one!!!
@CurryPuffy -
Hahaha, yeah! Sometimes people find it strange that I’m on here, but I love xanga and the community that it brings. It’s a nice, gentle place here.
Are you into Aviation as well? I know ChrisTao and I are.
I like the menu here. Actually, I like the menus at a lot of the places you visit. I enjoy seeing what other people are doing for inspiration — so whenever I need to feel inspired, I end up coming here and looking around.
I’m curious though, with no signage, and in a nondescript location, how did you find this place originally?
I think that would be an interesting place to visit even though I’m not a fan of the Republican party. The condensed milk sponge cakes looks yummy. The pigs ears – hmmm… I’ve never tried that before.
I also like the picture of you and W (the shadow). Does he have a blog?
@ElusiveWords -
The two items which make this place worth the visit are the Berlin Wall and the airplane. We sat through a couple of short (5 minute) movies documenting Reagan’s role in the Republican Party, etc.
Do try the pig ears at a Chinese restaurant, it’s very good! Yes, W has one too but not with Xanga.
@chow@ireallylikefood -
I’m not much into planes specifically, but aways find time to visit museums. I found this restaurant through word of mouth, and other bloggers. In fact, I also enjoy seeing photos in other blogs (like yours) and that will get me happy and going for the day!
@chow@ireallylikefood -
If you visit LA, don’t miss this place as you’ll get to climb on board the President’s plane! (Also, jelly bellies are all over the place!)
@yang1815 -
It’s quite an eye opener when I climbed on board! To travel like the President does sure trumps flying First Class!
@CurryPuffy -
Did it feel like you toured the entire plane or are certain places hidden and tucked away, closed for display?
@yang1815 -
I’m not surprised if there are hidden compartments such as basement areas etc. The inside of the plane has only one single corridor. We have the smaller version (Boeing 707) here. There are two larger (747′s) and newer ones which have replaced the 707 during the Bush Presidency.
@CurryPuffy -
Thanks! I’m going to visit one of these some time soon!!!
Despite the fact that Ronald Reagan was one of our most evil presidents (and singlehandedly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths from AIDS) I have told my friends I would like to go to the library and see the plane. I wonder if I’ll be able to sneak my camera in?
Not to worry Carey. I’m sure you can sneak a small point n’ shoot inside. Before you enter the plane, you’ll be asked for a photo with your friend. And then there’s another guard near the tail end. There are no other groups with us that day, it was late in the afternoon. Good luck!
