  • L.A. Eats – Brunch @ Susan Feniger’s STREET - W got a Sunday brunch coupon ($30 for two) from one of his foodie internet sites. Chef Susan Feniger appeared on the second season of Top Chef Masters that aired in 2010. She is also a seasoned TV personality, starring in 396 episodes of the popular “Too Hot Tamales” and “Tamales World Tour” on the Food Network in the 1990s. Prior to the shows on the Food Network, in 1993 Feniger appeared with Julia Child in her PBS series “Cooking with Master Chefs”. In April 2009, Feniger opened her first solo project Street, a multi-ethnic eatery of “street food” in Hollywood. Sample dishes include: millet puffs, paani puri, Massamum chicken curry, dumplings, Egyptian-style baked fish and peanut butter cookies for dessert.

The US$30 includes drinks (cocktails), amuse bouche, one appetizer, and two main courses; which is reasonably priced. The overall menu is a virtual museum of street food, snacks and savories from every part of Asia. I love street food, and next time, I’m going to sample their Hong Kong Milk Tea (darjeeling steeped with fresh ginger and frothed with sweetened condensed milk). It was a delightful brunch and the restaurant is a casual but sophisticated place to be!

L.A. Eats – Birthday Treats @ Water Grill - I treated my baby brother for his birthday at this seafood restaurant. Downtown’s Water Grill recently underwent a renovation and rebranding. After several months of closure and 1.5 million dollars in investments, the former fine dining Michelin One Star restaurant has been transformed into a lively urban seafood destination, complete with an open kitchen and a fabulous marble bar. The prices are still quite hefty, but the vibe is definitely more upbeat and the menu more approachable.

The iced seafood platters, especially the medium-size one for $75, are very generous for the price, easily enough for three or four to share, and piled with meaty shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels, crab, lobster and other things. But since we don’t like mussels and clams, we had the oyster sampler instead. But on hindsight, we should have substituted with more oysters instead. Afterall, this was a very filling dinner after eating the whole fish. Next time around, we are ordering the seafood tower to quell our seafood craving!

  • @ZSA_MD - Thanks, Zakiah! This is my second time trying STREET; their food is on the expensive side, so we only eat there once in a while. :P

  • Wow… awesome food porn as always Gary. I should surprise you one of these days at LA (and pretend it’s my birthday!) hahaha…..

  • wow..how much do you spend on food per week? i’m curious..

  • i’m a fan of two hot tamales. too bad i never got the chance to dine at any of their establishments back when i used to stay in LA. fenigan’s new venture looks like a great place to hang out. n what a great bday dinner. pretty much everything you guys ordered were what i personally would love to sample on. lime juice beverage, pesto, fish, ice cream… well, minus the oysters. you know, gary, my bday is coming ;p

  • @ElusiveWords - Haha~Matt, the welcome mat will always here!!

  • @happyobligations - I lost count….perhaps not exceeding a couple of hundred? :P

  • @rudyhou - Oh, you used to be a LA native too? Rudy, have you picked an eatery for your birthday?

  • @CurryPuffy -  no no no. i was never a LA native. only stayed there for 3 months. for a voluntary work. for an experience and to finish up my required Co-op program in order to graduate and get my degree. i used to stay in the korean town area. loved it. but didn’t enjoy the city. so after graduation, i chose to move to SF instead and stayed there for a year. again, for work.

my bday? gosh, haven’t thought about it at all. not even sure where best to go in HK. i’ll leave that to you, gary. but would love to have a proper high-tea in HK if time allows. i’m still thinking of that korean high-tea you had in seoul. such presentation and choices just watered my mouth in an instant.
