  • Song of the Day

    清晨…太安靜了…
    怎麼這麼灰色? 我還不習慣…
    躺下來…看到的世界會是如何?
    只不過是一個塞滿衣服的衣櫃…還有一些…寂寞罷了….

One day, I came across a project by a Texas based photographer Mark Menjivar ‘You Are What You Eat’ , which is a series of portraits made by examining the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the untied states. For three years, Mark traveled around the country exploring the issue of hunger. A refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. Each fridge is photographed “as is.” nothing added, nothing taken away. These are portraits of the rich and the poor, vegetarians, those left out, the under appreciated, dreamers, and so much more. After viewing his photo exhibits, I wondered it’s quite amazing that we can tell something about a person by just looking into his/hers songs or video collection, or their closets, and of course, the FRIDGE! Here are some of Mark’s collections…

Street Advertiser that lives on $432 fixed monthly income. This is quite sad,
even college kids utilize the space better with their cheap beer and midnight pizzas.

Bartender’s fridge. Goes to sleep at 8am and wakes up at 4pm daily. I wonder
why is there an American flag chilling inside?

Carpenter/Photographer’s fridge. And this is probably the most interesting one.
A werewolf that likes frozen Jose Cuervo? Love that frozen lemon in there – his
    only source of vitamins.

Botanist’s fridge. I like how the Pepsi bottle was converted into a giant,
cap-less water bottle. And that chili on the right does not look too happy.

Last Saturday, Chris stopped over in LA from his multi-city voyage and we dinned at Orris . As the numerous plates of food were arriving onto our table, we immediately start snapping away…

First course, Amuse-bouche of Ratatouille with Fresh Eggplants, Tomatoes and Capers, light Summer flavors
piled on top of a slice of Baguette…

A chef’s special, Freshly Smoked Salmon on top of Potato Pancakes served with Creme Fraiche and Tobiko
    Flying Fish Roe…

Dungeness Crab Salad “Nests” – Freshly handpicked Dungeness Crab served on top of Julienned Cucumber
    in a Light Ginger Dressing…

Squash Blossoms stuffed with Shrimp Mousse and Pistachios, Lightly Fried Tempura-style and topped with
    a Calmatta Olive Salsa…
    DSC_0973

Another one of the Chef’s Special, Halibut Tempura on a Tomato Tarragon Puree with Garlic Aioli, the fish
was done lightly and mixed well with the puree…
    DSC_0975

Tender Berkshire Pork Loin Medallions sauteed in a zesty Green Peppercorn Sauce, the pork is very tender
and complemented by an excellent sauce…
    DSC_0978

Last dish to round up the delicious dinner – Slices of Roasted Beets topped with Etorki Basque Sheep Cheese
and finished with a drizzle of Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil with a sprig of Dill, sweet tasty beets mixed well
with the cheese texture, punctuated with the vinegar…

Overall, it was a very satisfying meal and we were very happy to see Chris again, and he promised that he will get Tawn to join in next time!

On one Saturday, we had brunch at a relatively new establishment near Silverlake – LAMill – actually a coffee “Boutique”.
This sounded quite pretentious to me, since when are coffee shops becoming boutiques?

I had a Iced Latte and W tried their special coffee recommended by our waitress…
    DSC_0954

The Not-Quite-French Toast, actually toast bread doused with brown sugar and cinnamon, kind of rock hard
and not sweet enough, I prefer the regular French Toast…
    DSC_0958

Steak n’ Eggs, they fancied the dish up in arrangements, the skirt steak is quite tender but the eggs are lukewarm…
    DSC_0956

Overall, I feel this place gave me a “Gay Vibe”, with the walls decorated with faux art and antiques, especially with
these fancy Greek art and the Red Colour Couches we sat in….

The meal costs almost US$25 for my portion, which is quite pricey for breakfast. Next time, we’ll go for the afternoon tea.

  • Ever thought for going into food advertising photography? =P
    You made me HUNGRY!
The Frig Photos are very funny!
When I had room-mates, we have different territories in the frig
    and color coding too! ^^
So nice that xanga peeps are meeting up in real life and socializing! ^^
    How wonderful!

  • I’m glad you included a picture of your fridge! You want to be my personal shopper? LOL

  • Is the last fridge yours?
    It looks so neat

  • Your photos of the food at Orris are ten times better than mine!  I’m sending people over to see them.  Actually, could you email me that picture of me and Eric?  I find it funny that you caught me doing the same thing you and W were doing.

If that last one is your frige, do the waffles belong to you or your roommate?  You don’t strike me as the Aunt Jemima type.  Interesting collection, though.  I never thought about fridges reflecting personalities, but I guess they do.

LAMill sounds kind of… worth skipping.  Company was good, though, I’m sure.

  • @ZenPaper -

Haha~Evan, I’m glad my food porn made you hungry. We need to have a Xanga meet at major cities all over, you’ll come, right?

  • @CareyGLY -

To be thy personal shopper would be a real honor! When may I start?

  • @Wangium -

Oh yes, that’s my fridge. I hide all the messy food inside the drawers!

  • @christao408 -

Sure Chris, I’ll send it in no time. Those ‘junk food’ are all frozen dinners and are not mine. But I do eat a few of those meals when I’m in extreme hunger.

  • lovely pictures. i am living vicariously through you in them: YUM!

  • Nice pics as always – the steak and eggs look pretty good. Too bad the eggs weren’t hot.

I love the pics of you guys taking food pics. We need a group shot of the 4 of you doing the same thing. It’s great watching you guys get together.

Your fridge is very neat. I think I need to clean mine out.

  • @stepaside_loser -

I’m glad you enjoyed the food porn! Bon Appetit!

  • @ElusiveWords -

Actually, by posting a photo of my fridge, I hope some of my readers can provide a glimpse of the contents of their fridge!

  • No way… I’m gonna clean out my fridge first before I post any pics of it. hahahaaha….

  • I sadly have fridge contents similar to the street advertiser lol. Mainly because I don’t have a kitchen at the moment, and have to eat out all the time. And I love love love the salmon croquettes that they have at Orris!

  • @Rm2046 -

Oh sure, I remember the salmon croquettes, they’re wonderful and great together with a glass of Chardonnay!

  • Hehe, I love the fridge of the Xanga-FoodBlogger wannabe’s fridge…hmmm…makes me think, is that YOUR fridge???

  • @brooklyn2028 -

Yes, that’s mine….just spur of the moment thing to take a shot. I wonder how other Xanga peeps’ fridges look like?

  • My fridge is actually half frozen cuz the stupid thermostat is frozen on the coldest setting. fresh veggies in the center of the fridge away from the walls which would otherwise freeze them. Water from accumulated ice every now and then goes into the veggie rack so my roommate just uses it for beer storage. sad.

but yeah, Orris looks better every time I see it. That beet dish looks quite easy to try making

  • @brooklyn2028 -

I’ll take a picture of my fridge and post it but it’s VERY empty at the moment…

  •  Food porn at its best yet. Love those pictures. Incredible.
