Sushi, sashimi and izakaya – Bar Hayama is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and sake bar on Sawtelle , where this is also known as “Little Tokyo West”. The “bar” of Bar Hayama refers to their extensive sake bar and the sushi bar. The menu offers traditional Japanese dishes and also even microbiotic ones. The best spot to hang out is the courtyard, where there is a very cozy and hypnotic fire pit.
Amuse bouche (front); lobster miso soup (rear)…..
Hotate (scallop) from Hokkaido, Japan; and Uni sushi (sea urchin) from Santa Barbara…..
Sashimi – Toro (from Hawaii), Tuna (from Hawaii), Albacore (from Canada), Salmon (Atlantic), Hamachi (Japanese Yellow Tail)…..
Strawberry melba with vanilla ice-cream…..
It was a delicious and “romantic” meal, Japanese dining around a fire pit and under the starry night sky. The seating is quite limited at the pit section, so reserve a spot well in advance.
On our second visit, we sat inside the main dining room, ordered up more dishes, including chilled sake…..
EBI Shinjo With Sweet Chilli Sauce – chopped shrimp, deep-fried in wonton skins…..
Sauteed mushrooms in butter soy sauce…..
Hotate – scallops from Hokkaido, Japan…..
Sauteed scallops and mushroom with ponzu butter sauce…..
Uni – sea urchin from Santa Barbara…..
Amaebi – spot prawn from Santa Barbara…..
It was a very sumptuous dinner, but a bit pricey overall. I heard rave reviews about their Wagyu beef sashimi, definitely give them a try next time!

I’ve finished licking the screen on my laptop. It was delicious. I can only imagine what the real food must have tasted like.
Don’t you and W ever have regular meals like instant noodles, spam, hotdog …. hahahaha.
Missing a fish in the sashimi???
Boy the box of uni looks soooooooo delish!!!
And fresh hotate!!!!!!!!!
AND AMAEBI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Hmmm, you make me wanna head down to a Japanese restaurant. I want some sashimi now!!
man, you eat good!
@ElusiveWords - LOL….We discovered a place that serves up very delicious German sausage (hotdog), but I did not bring my camera. *sad face*
@yang1815 - Oh crap! I did not recall what the last item was! *scratching head repeatedly*
Andy, you love sashimi and sushi, I remember you had those very delicious Japanese meals in Taipei!
wow, these pictures are not only amazing, but they joke made my mouth water. this looks so delicious (:
@icepearlz - Thank you! This place consistently serves up very fresh sashimi, and provides good lighting for us to take photos too!
@CaKaLusa - Oh Chris, I enjoyed your cooking episodes on YouTube!
@p3terr - I’m glad the food porn is working! LOL….Lucky that there’s good lighting too!
mm… that’s another thing i haven’t had in a while — really good quality sushi. i really need to visit la again!
Very “artsy” photos, I like!
i had always wondered what’s inside that mysterious little house! now i want to try it!
@kunhuo42 - This will be a good place to try if you visit LA. Actually, the entire street on Sawtelle has lots of good eats! (Check out the link “sawtelle” in the introduction).
@oxyGENE_08 - Thank you for pointing that out, Gene! I’m starting to notice the “artsy” side now. LOL
@ds0905 - Yeah, that mysterious little house, with high hedges, I always wonder what’s inside too!
Jealous.
@CurryPuffy - I would guess tai I suppose. And yes I love sashimi and nigiri sushi. Surprised there’s no aji? Or you don’t like it?
@nimbusthedragon - Thank you!
@yang1815 - I’ll gladly take one piece mostly, their silver colored skin does not appeal too well to my taste….hehe
Well, the food all looks very nice. Price could change that perception, of course! Impressed at the number of locally sourced ingredients.
@christao408 - We were stuffed during the second visit, the final tap was about $150; I treated W for a special occasion. If it were for a regular dinner, we would have gone elsewhere! hehe…..
Gary, the pictures are so good. I am not sure I could eat anything raw. my sushi experience is only with avocu, or shrimp tempura and other veggie things.
I LOVED THE STRAWBERRY MELBA ICECREAM. When I was a child in india, we used to go to a place and peach melba. The place closed in the early sixties. I have had the peach melba in different cities all over the world, but no one comes close to what I used to have.
@ZSA_MD - Thank you, Dr. Zakiah, maybe someday, you should try some of this, just close your eyes and take it in and enjoy the freshness. I think that must be one very good peach melba, when nothing else in other parts of the world comes close! LOL
@CurryPuffy - What about saba??? That’s perhaps one of my favorites. Well, I think they are all my favorites but it is definitely one I order every time.
